What is the Medicare Levy?
The Medicare levy is a 2% tax on your taxable income that helps fund Australia's public healthcare system (Medicare). Most Australian residents pay this levy unless they earn below the low-income threshold or have a valid exemption.
What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge?
The Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) is an additional tax for higher-income earners who don't hold private hospital insurance. It's designed to encourage higher earners to take out private health cover and reduce demand on the public system. The surcharge is 1%–1.5% depending on your income.
