How the Two Tests Work
Services Australia applies both the assets test and the income test. The test that produces the lower payment determines what you actually receive.
- Assets test: Pension reduces by $3/fortnight for each $1,000 in assets above the threshold
- Income test: Pension reduces by 50c for each $1 of assessable income above the free area
- Your principal home is not counted as an asset
Who Is Eligible for the Age Pension?
To receive the Age Pension in Australia you must be aged 67 or older, be an Australian resident and have lived in Australia for at least 10 years (including 5 years continuously), and meet the assets and income tests administered by Services Australia (Centrelink).
What Counts as an Asset?
Assessable assets include financial investments (savings, shares, managed funds), investment properties, vehicles, and personal property above a reasonable threshold. Your primary residence is excluded. Superannuation accounts are counted once you reach pension age.
What Counts as Assessable Income?
Assessable income includes employment income, rental income, dividends, interest, and deemed income from financial assets. Centrelink applies deeming rules to financial investments — it assumes they earn a set rate of return regardless of actual earnings.
